Pollen Analysis: Not Just a Qualitative Tool

چکیده

Pollen analysis is seen as a largely qualitative method, but recent developments in analytical techniques, technologically and theoretically, have directed a move towards a greater use of quantitative interpretation. Use of these new methods allows more detailed information to be obtained from pollen data and in turn widens the scope for use of this technique. It is often assumed that pollen analysis only informs on the terrestrial changes in vegetation, but these analytical developments mean pollen data can be used to infer changes in climate, human activity and societal development, all of which are central to obtaining a holistic view of landscape change. This paper outlines the range of contributions pollen data can make to studies along with the considerations required to ensure reliable and informative data is obtained.

Proximity to forest edge does not affect crop production despite pollen limitation.

A decline in pollination function has been linked to agriculture expansion and intensification. In northwest Argentina, pollinator visits to grapefruit, a self-compatible but pollinator-dependent crop, decline by approximately 50% at 1km from forest edges. We evaluated whether this decrease in visitation also reduces the pollination service in this crop. We analysed the quantity and quality of ...

Effects of Supplementary Pollination on Qualitative and Quantitative Traits of Pistachio in Qazvin Region

In this study the artificial pollination of pistachio was investigated. Two types of pollen of local selective genotypes (Q1 and Q2) which were different pollinizers were used. The experiment had six treatments. Qazvini and Ohadi cultivars were pollinated with supplementary pollinations as treatment which was covered with cotton bag, natural pollination as a control which was not covered and tw...

Gamma, Gaussian and logistic distribution models for airborne pollen grains and fungal spore season dynamics

The characteristics of a pollen season, such as timing and magnitude, depend on a number of factors such as the biology of the plant and environmental conditions. The main aim of this study was to develop mathematical models that explain dynamics in atmospheric concentrations of pollen and fungal spores recorded in Rzeszów (SE Poland) in 2000-2002. Plant taxa with different characteristics in t...

Pollinizer Influence on Fruit Quality Traits in Japanese Plum (Prunus salicina Lindl.)

Most Japanese plum-type cultivars are self-incompatible and therefore cross pollination is necessary to ensure fruit set. Moreover, pollen can directly affect fruit development process and quality.  This study was carried out to investigate the effect of 6 pollen sources (‘Goje Sabz’, ‘Simka’, ‘Shablon’, ‘Methley’, ‘Myrobalan’ and ‘Black Star’) on  fruit quantitative and qualitative characteris...

Genetic Analysis of Two Chromosome Interchanges I N Barley from F 2 Data '

HE use of backcross data for the genetic analysis involving an interchange T between two non-homologous chromosomes has been clearly defined and reviewed. JOACHIM (1947) has presented tables to facilitate the use of the product method for the analysis of Fz data involving semisterility. In a selfpollinated plant such as barley, this method presents a convenient tool for the determination of lin...
